    Descripción

New Economy Project seeks an experienced staff attorney to work on cutting-edge legal advocacy that advances racial and economic justice in New York City. The staff attorney will play a vital role working with low-income New Yorkers and grassroots groups – through our financial justice hotline, impact litigation, and policy advocacy – to challenge Wall Street banks and other corporations that extract wealth from Black, brown, and immigrant communities.

New Economy Project works to build an economy that works for all, rooted in racial justice, cooperation, neighborhood equity, and ecological sustainability. We combine coalition-building, legal and policy advocacy, popular education, applied research, communications, and other strategies in our work. We work closely with neighborhood groups to advance community land trusts, public banking, financial and worker cooperatives, and other community-led institutions that build power and community wealth in Black, brown, and immigrant neighborhoods.

    CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

The staff attorney’s core responsibilities will include:

    • Providing legal assistance through our NYC Financial Justice Hotline, a free legal hotline for low-income New Yorkers confronting abusive lending, debt collection, and other matters
    • Working on groundbreaking impact litigation that addresses systemic racial discrimination and wealth extraction by Wall Street banks, debt buyers, and others
    • Working with city- and state-wide coalitions to advocate for bold policy change, and conducting legal and policy research, media advocacy, and other strategic activities
    • Representing the organization at state and local legislative hearings, in meetings with elected officials and other policymakers, and at community forums
    • Contributing to strategic communications, including reports, know-your-rights material, and “New Yorkers Speak Out” testimonials
    • Participating in organizational strategic planning, legal and policy advocacy training, and other professional development opportunities

    EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

    The ideal candidate will:

    • Have 2-5 years’ prior experience at a public interest law organization or similar setting
    • Embrace New Economy Project’s vision, mission, and commitment to transformational change, racial justice, just transition, and economic democracy
    • Be committed to supporting and taking lead from directly-affected people and communities to build long-term power and effect change
    • Be extremely organized, motivated, and detail-oriented
    • Possess strong writing, research, analytical, communication and time-management skills
    • Have a track record of working effectively with individuals and community groups across racial, gender, class and other identities
    • Be admitted to the New York State bar
    • Be fluent in Spanish

    COMPENSATION

Salary is competitive with NYC public interest law organizations and commensurate with years of experience, with an expected annual salary between $75,000 and $85,000. New Economy Project offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes health, dental, and vision insurance, 403(b) and flexible spending plans, and generous paid time off, including a three-month sabbatical after five years.

    LOCATION

New Economy Project’s office is located in NYC. The position is hybrid, with both in-office and remote work.
