    Mission and Philosophy

The Shalom Hartman Institute is a leading research and educational center serving Israel and world Jewry. We work to enrich the moral and spiritual life of Israel and the Jewish people, deepen the commitment to pluralism and Israel’s Jewish and democratic character, and rebuild the covenant between Israel and the Jewish world.

Through our community of outstanding scholars and educators, the Institute develops innovative responses to the challenges of our time, cultivates a new generation of leaders and change agents, and builds transformational educational projects that help inspire a better Judaism and a better Israel for the 21st century.

    Position

The Shalom Hartman Institute is seeking a dynamic, creative, and mission-aligned educator to teach across a wide range of programs and audiences. We are seeking to hire at either the senior or junior level with commensurate compensation.

This unique role combines teaching responsibilities with a research portfolio, at an 80%/20% ratio. Faculty will join a lively global team of scholars committed to interdisciplinary collaboration, high-impact thought-leadership, and nurturing the next generation of Jewish leaders and thinkers through transformative ideas. The ideal candidate will have an advanced degree in Jewish Studies, Israel Studies, or a related field (either ordination or academic) and can teach across several Institute platforms – for lay leaders, Jewish communal professional leaders and rabbis, and young adults. Faculty should be comfortable learning the existing Hartman curricula and teaching on a wide range of topics, including issues related to Israel and Jewish peoplehood, Jewish identity, and other Jewish topics. This position requires NY base or very frequent NY presence and will require domestic travel approximately 1-2 times per month for several days at a time and approximately 2 trips per year to Israel, including a summer residency of up to a month.

Positions are available at various levels of seniority.

    Responsibilities

    • Teach in-person and virtual classes to meet the needs of a broad range of audiences and on a broad range of topics relating to major challenges and questions facing the Jewish community and Israel.
    • Lecture and present in various formats as needed – in dialogue with other scholars, in digital media, at conferences and colloquia. Develop and sustain an active research agenda as part of active participation as a fellow in the Kogod Research Center that contributes to the Institute’s intellectual life and advances contemporary Jewish thought, with particular attention to issues of Israel, Jewish peoplehood, and pressing questions facing North American Jewry.
    • Produce original scholarship, essays, and/or applied thought pieces that can inform and enrich Hartman curricula, ensuring a strong integration between research and teaching; Publish essays, op-eds, and long-form pieces in a range of venues (Jewish and general audience) that translate complex ideas into accessible and compelling insights.
    • Serve as a public intellectual representing the Institute by contributing to contemporary conversations on Jewish life, Israel, and ethics through writing, speaking, and media engagement.
    • Build a recognizable voice aligned with the Institute’s mission, helping to elevate its influence and impact across diverse communities and constituencies.

    Qualifications

    • An advanced degree in Jewish Studies (either ordination or academic)
    • 5+ years of relevant professional experience
    • Deep understanding of and alignment with SHI NA’s mission
    • Ability to travel frequently (2/month around NA, 2/year to Israel)
    • Highly professional demeanor; mindful of appropriate correspondence tone with key stakeholders
    • Proven ability to thrive in a dynamic, high-energy environment
    • Excellent communication skills
    • Track record of demonstrating sound judgment by making appropriate decisions and knowing when to take initiative, and when to elevate problems
    • Capable of working independently as well as collaboratively
    • Customer-service oriented demeanor
    • Flexible work style with the ability to work under tight deadlines and with shifting priorities
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
    • Good sense of humor
