    EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR JOB DESCRIPTION

    If you are a passionate advocate for people and families impacted by mental illness and enthusiastic about leading an organization dedicated to providing support, education, information, training and resources as well as advocating for system and policy changes to support the advancement of mental health programs, services, and awareness in the state of Maryland, consider joining the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Maryland (NAMI MD).

    How the Executive Director Will Make an Impact:

    NAMI MD’s Executive Director sets the vision for the NAMI MD, collaborates with the Board to establish the strategic direction of NAMI MD, leads fundraising efforts; develops and maintains relationships with stakeholders and affiliate organizations; and manages and develops staff and volunteers enabling the organization’s continued success, and impact on the community NAMI MD serves.

    The Executive Director is responsible for all operational aspects of NAMI MD and will establish the yearly budget and oversee the financials; create policies and procedures; facilitate/develop and support the implementation of new programs, learnings, and offerings; advocate for policy changes and reform; and ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.

    The Executive Director collaborates with the NAMI MD Board of Directors; in developing the strategic plans and succession plans; and represents NAMI MD to the public.

    What You Will Need to Succeed:

    • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) required, preferably in Business, Communications, Nonprofit Development, or another related field
    • At least 10 years’ experience in a senior management position in a nonprofit organization, foundation, government agency, or commercial entity
    • Demonstrated experience with financial management and operations; strategic planning; action planning and reporting; program development and expansion; staff and volunteer management; succession planning; and board development and governance.
    • Proven ability to lead and oversee fundraising, donor development, and grant development
    • Adept at building trusted and effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders
    • Experience leading policy and advocacy efforts that support people living with mental illnesses and their families at federal, state, and local levels.
    • Ability to build, develop, and lead high performing teams focused on a shared vision and understanding of the mission of NAMI MD and the role of the organization
    • Highly collaborative work style with an openness to new ideas
    • Strong interpersonal skills - listening, challenging, candid, approachable, trustworthy, warmth, compassion, empathy, and humility
    • Knowledge and awareness of mental health issues
    • Compassion for people and families living with mental illness
    • Certification in a NAMI MD Core Course within first 180 days of joining

    Key Responsibilities

    • Coordinate with Board and Key stakeholders to develop and execute a strategic plan to drive the organization’s growth and impact in both the for-profit and nonprofit marketplace.
    • Develop and implement a comprehensive strategic action plan designed to drive the organization's growth and expand its impact across both the nonprofit/and for-profit sectors
    • Lead and manage a team of professionals with confidence and decisiveness ensuring high performance and effective execution of programs and initiatives.
    • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including investors, partners, and community leaders.
    • Oversee the organization’s financial management, including budgets, fundraising, and revenue generation strategies.
    • Monitor and evaluate the organization’s impact and growth through measurable performance indicators to drive continuous improvement and innovation.
    • Advocate for the organization’s mission and values to external audiences and the broader community.
    • Ensure compliance with the NAMI State Organization Charter Agreement and Addendum to NAMI State Organization Charter Agreement between NAMI, Inc. and NAMI Maryland and all relevant laws, regulations, and ethical standards in all organizational activities, including mutually agreed on funding partner compliance requirements

    • Proficient in utilizing digital tools and platforms to streamline operations, expand, outreach, drive innovative fundraising strategies, and further the mission of an organization.
