    Operations, HR & Development Manager

Baker Institute for Children with Hearing Loss

Remote | 35 hours per week | $40 per hour | Benefits eligible

California candidates preferred, with a strong preference for the San Francisco Bay Area.

Make meaningful work your everyday work.

At Baker, we see what becomes possible when children with hearing loss and their families have access to knowledgeable professionals, practical guidance, and a community that understands their journey. Parents gain confidence. Children build communication skills. Local professionals develop expertise that continues serving their communities long after a conference ends.

We’re seeking an experienced nonprofit professional who wants to help make that work possible—and help it grow.

As our Operations, HR & Development Manager, you’ll work closely with the Executive Director to strengthen our operations, support employees, and advance fundraising efforts that sustain our programs. Your organizational skills, fundraising experience, and thoughtful ideas will have a visible impact.

You do not need personal or professional experience with hearing loss. You do need a sincere connection to our mission and a desire to make a difference for children and families.

    About Baker

The Baker Institute for Children with Hearing Loss helps children develop listening and spoken language by supporting families, providing access to specialized services, and strengthening professional expertise.

Our work includes Listen to Me!® conferences and workshops, the Baker Scholars therapy program, and the Hear Kenya initiative. Through partnerships in California, Hawai‘i, Kenya, and other communities around the world, we connect families with resources and help build local capacity for lasting support.

We are a small, collaborative organization built on strong relationships, thoughtful use of resources, and deep care for the families we serve.

    Your Role and Team

This position brings together organizational operations, HR administration, and development execution. You’ll manage recurring processes, anticipate needs, contribute fundraising ideas, and coordinate events and campaigns.

You’ll have clear partners in this work. Our Admin & Communications Coordinator handles substantial administrative and communications execution, including donor records and routine acknowledgments. Our Senior Development Strategist collaborates on grant strategy and broader fundraising strategy and donor engagement. You will provide the project management, coordination, and execution needed to move fundraising initiatives and events forward.

Outside accounting, legal, payroll, and benefits professionals provide specialized guidance. The Executive Director leads major-donor relationships, organizational strategy, and final personnel and financial decisions. Priorities will be established together to fit the 35-hour schedule.

    Key Responsibilities

    Operations and financial coordination

    • Maintain operational calendars, organizational records, systems, and recurring deadlines.
    • Improve workflows and document essential processes so responsibilities are clear and knowledge is shared.
    • Coordinate invoices, payment requests, reimbursements, expense records, and budget tracking with leadership and accounting partners.
    • Manage vendor relationships, contract renewals, insurance documentation, and administrative requirements with appropriate approvals and specialist guidance.
    • Coordinate records for audits, organizational filings, board activities, and Baker’s transition to a California nonprofit corporation.

    HR and employee support

    • Manage employee and contractor onboarding and offboarding, including documentation, records, system access, and transition steps.
    • Coordinate payroll through Gusto and contractor administration through Deel.
    • Administer benefits, leave tracking, and retirement-plan processes with the appropriate providers.
    • Maintain confidential personnel records and current policies, and support the Executive Director with hiring and personnel processes.

    Development and fundraising

    • Contribute practical ideas for fundraising campaigns, donor engagement, sponsorships, and events.
    • Translate fundraising priorities into budgets, timelines, assignments, and follow-through.
    • Plan and execute fundraising events, including venues, vendors, ticketing, sponsorship activities, auctions, and event-day logistics.
    • Coordinate stewardship and campaign schedules with communications and development colleagues.
    • Help develop compelling appeals, donor updates, and event materials.

    Conference and travel logistics

    • Coordinate staff travel, lodging, venues, catering, supplies, and other arrangements within approved budgets.
    • Work with program leads and administrative staff to align logistics with program and participant needs.
    • Provide on-site operational support when assigned and complete post-event financial and operational follow-up.

    What You’ll Bring

    • Experience in nonprofit operations or a comparable role involving HR administration, organizational systems, and financial coordination.
    • Demonstrated nonprofit development experience, including fundraising-event planning, donor stewardship, and implementing fundraising campaigns.
    • Hands-on experience with payroll coordination, employee onboarding, benefits administration, and confidential records.
    • Strong organization, attention to detail, and dependable follow-through.
    • Comfort with budgets, financial documentation, and working with outside specialists.
    • Clear writing and warm, respectful communication with colleagues, donors, vendors, and partners.
    • Sound judgment, discretion, and the ability to recognize when expert guidance is needed.
    • Confidence working independently in a remote environment, proficiency in Google Workspace, and the ability to learn new systems.
    • A genuine interest in Baker’s mission.

Experience with Gusto, Deel, Bloomerang, Qgiv, international programs, or complex conference logistics is helpful. We welcome applicants with varied professional paths and transferable experience.
