The National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) is the leading national voice for dignity, respect, and recognition for domestic workers in the United States. Founded in 2007, NDWA represents an alliance of over 76 organizations across 22 states, advocating for the rights of domestic workers in the U.S. With more than 395,000 workers nationwide, we envision a society where domestic work is recognized as essential, valued, and supported with fair labor protections. Our goal is to elevate care workers to the essential workers of the 21st-century economy and ensure domestic work is a pathway to economic security and dignity.

In the South Bay, we are committed to organizing and advocating for domestic workers to ensure their rights are upheld through enforcement, outreach, and education. This role will focus on building relationships, providing educational resources, and ensuring compliance with labor laws to ensure domestic workers can exercise their rights effectively. Made possible by a time-limited grant from the California Domestic Workers Coalition (CDWC), NDWA is dedicating one full time staff person to act as the anchor for the participation of NDWA in the Domestic Worker Employer and Education Program. The Domestic Worker Employer and Education Program (DWEOP) was established to empower workers by educating them about their rights,how to stand up for their rights on the job and how to support other workers to do the same. Through DWEOP, we also build the leadership skills of workers leaders and provide employers with education and tools to ensure compliance with labor laws.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Enforcement & Compliance

• Lead strategic enforcement efforts by identifying labor violations and high-impact cases that can set precedents for improved labor standards in the South Bay region.
• Support workers who have experienced wage theft or other violations of their rights to communicate directly with their employers to resolve the situation or to file complaints with relevant local enforcement agencies or take legal action with local legal service providers.
• Track all labor violation cases in a database, maintaining detailed records and monitoring timelines to ensure timely follow-up.
• Work with local organizers and legal service providers to support the resolution of claims and ensure workers' rights are protected.
• Build and maintain a cohort of workers who have experienced labor abuses to provide mutual support and strengthen the community.

Outreach & Education

• Conduct in-person and virtual outreach to engage domestic workers across the South Bay, educating them on their rights under state and local labor laws.
• Organize one-on-one meetings, membership meetings, workshops, and other educational forums to reach workers, particularly those in vulnerable communities.
• Create and distribute multilingual educational materials, including flyers, posters, and digital resources, that communicate key labor rights and protections.
• Train workers on how to negotiate work agreements, set wages, and prevent abusive practices.
• Conduct follow-up outreach to ensure workers who have received education and materials are empowered to take action when necessary.

Community Building & Leadership Development

• Develop domestic worker leaders by offering leadership training, organizing workshops, and providing individual support to help workers take on more active roles in legislative advocacy campaigns and organizing efforts.
• Identify new worker leaders and support their development through leadership programs, including training them to facilitate membership meetings and lead education efforts.
• Support and grow the chapter’s member base by converting workers engaged in enforcement and education efforts into active members.
• Collaborate with organizers to create worker committees and lead campaigns for future legislative and policy changes to improve conditions for domestic workers.

Collaboration & Advocacy

• Work with local community organizations, government agencies, and legal partners to advocate for the rights of domestic workers and improve enforcement mechanisms.
• Advocate for increased priority for domestic worker issues in local government offices and ensure that domestic workers' needs are represented in policy discussions.
• Provide feedback to local enforcement agencies on their processes and practices, helping them improve how they handle domestic worker claims and support their rights.
• Partner with community allies to ensure that domestic workers’ issues are raised within broader labor, racial justice, and immigrant rights movements.

QUALIFICATIONS

• 1-3 years of experience in grassroots community organizing, with an emphasis on labor organizing, racial justice, immigrant rights, or base building (paid or volunteer experience).
• Deep commitment to working with low-wage, multiracial, immigrant, and women workers, particularly in the domestic worker sector.
• Strong ability to educate workers on their rights, help them overcome fear, and motivate them to take action by filing claims or organizing for better workplace conditions.
• Fluent in both spoken and written English and Spanish, with the ability to engage workers from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a proven ability to connect with and inspire community members.
• Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.
• A valid driver's license and access to a vehicle for outreach and meetings (mileage reimbursement provided).
• Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed to reach workers and support campaigns.
• Basic computer skills (e.g., Google Suite, Zoom, and database management).

Preferred but not required:

• Familiarity with the domestic worker sector and related advocacy or labor organizing.
• Experience developing and executing leadership development programs.
• Experience with meeting facilitation and popular education training.
• Knowledge of local government processes and experience working with public agencies.

Additional Information:

This is a term limited position with an anticipated end date of March 2026, contingent upon funding.
