    HR & Operations Generalist

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area Oakland, CA | Hybrid (mostly in-office) | Full-time, exempt $80,000 to $90,000, commensurate with experience

Help build the workplace behind the mission.

At Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area, we match young people with caring mentors who walk alongside them through some of life's biggest moments. The relationships we create change lives.

Our staff makes that possible. They deserve a workplace that reflects the same care we put into our mission.

    That's where you come in.

We're hiring an HR & Operations Generalist to be the person our team counts on. You'll run payroll, manage our HRIS, answer benefits questions, onboard new hires, and keep the office humming. When someone needs support, you're the one they come to. When a process needs fixing, you're the one who notices and fixes it.

This role sits at the intersection of people and operations. You'll partner with our VP of Finance & Operations to make sure every employee feels valued, informed, and set up to do their best work.

    What you'll own

    People Operations (60%)

    • Run biweekly payroll for 30 to 50 employees on Paylocity (or similar)
    • Manage onboarding, off-boarding, and everything in between, including work-from-home equipment coordination
    • Administer benefits, open enrollment, leaves of absence, and accommodations (FMLA, CFRA, ADA, PDL) in line with California and federal law
    • Coordinate full-cycle recruiting and performance review cycles in partnership with our HR consultant
    • Plan team meetings, retreats, and the moments that build culture
    • Keep employee records clean, confidential, and audit-ready

    Operations (30%)

    • Manage office supplies, workspace reservations, and vendor relationships (building, janitorial, IT)
    • Support accounts payable through Bill.com
    • Document and refine our SOPs
    • Keep vendor contracts and W-9s current and in order
    • Maintain a consistent in-office presence for the team

    Technology Coordination (10%)

    • Administer Google Workspace and coordinate system access during onboarding and offboarding
    • Manage equipment inventory and lifecycle, including secure hardware destruction
    • Partner with our IT consultant on security settings and maintenance (you won't be the IT help desk)

    What we're looking for

    • 3 to 5 years of HR generalist experience, ideally in a nonprofit or mission-driven environment
    • Working knowledge of California and federal employment law, payroll, and compliance
    • Experience with Paylocity or a comparable HRIS and payroll platform
    • A strong service orientation. You like helping people, and people can tell
    • High attention to detail and a track record of handling confidential information with care
    • Comfort juggling priorities without sacrificing accuracy
    • Genuine interest in working across different perspectives, backgrounds, and styles
    • HR certification is a plus, not a requirement

    What we offer

    • $80,000 to $90,000 base salary, paid biweekly
    • Full-time, exempt role (40 hours per week, with occasional weekend or evening events a few times per year)
    • Hybrid schedule based primarily in our Oakland office
    • The chance to support the staff making real change for young people across the Bay Area
