    We are a community-focused spiritual learning center based in Berkeley California. Our core mission is to intensify the kindness, magic, goodness, and intelligence in the world.

    We are crafting a broad curriculum in what we call “consciousness culture”: meditation, movement, spiritual traditions, and visionary arts and culture. The variety of our offerings allows individuals to explore a range of modalities, learning from the highest quality instructors in an atmosphere of discernment, play, mutual respect, and scholarly/experiential depth.

    Our classes, workshops, and special events are led by contemplative masters and scientists, scholars and somatic wizards, imaginal artists and seasoned psychonauts. Think of the Alembic as a transformational festival, without the dust.

    About the Role

    The Managing Director is responsible for implementing the vision of the Alembic. The Managing Director builds community, leads and executes marketing strategy and media presence, builds relationships to bring in new instructors. The Managing Director is responsible for the overall health of the Alembic. This is a great opportunity for those who have experience running a yoga studio, meditation center, or other events space and are ready to manage a full learning center with diverse events and a small staff. This is perfect for someone with extensive connections to movement, meditation teachers, and practitioners.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Community Building (30%)

    • Represents the organization to the general public. Maintains effective relationships with the public, instructors, members and the board.
    • Promotes the Alembic to the community to attract teachers and members.
    • Increases membership by 50% by July 2027 through increased instructional hours and/or membership.
    • Builds and maintains relationships with donors and other funders.
    • Gathers and acts on feedback from participants/teachers.
    • Determines and implements plans to attract, retain, and support community members through online platforms and in-person events.
    • Actively recruits and trains new volunteers.
    • Builds relationships with members, instructors, and board members to foster a sense of belonging and collaboration.
    • Determines new ways of building community within the Alembic.
    • Assists and gives direction to the Board in development and implementation of short term/long term objectives and strategic goals.

    Revenue Generation (30%)

    • Drives growth in participation and instructional engagement at the Alembic
    • Develops overall marketing strategy for Alembic to increase member, instructor, and volunteer growth.
    • Responsible for creating and dispersing newsletter to all Alembic community on a weekly basis.
    • Has ultimate accountability for Alembic social media and course software.
    • Implements new revenue generation strategies.
    • Develops and implements fundraising strategy.
    • Provides oversight to all marketing, outreach, and engagement plans.
    • Coordinates with building owner regarding any significant building issues.

    HR/Legal/Finance (30%)

    • Proactively identifies any issues or potential issues and proposes solutions to Board, as necessary.
    • Maintains/develops processes, tools and resources; provides guidance and training as needed.
    • Provides feedback to all staff on a quarterly basis with written feedback provided semi-annually.
    • Manages performance of all employees, as well as ensure compliance.
    • Drafts and maintains job descriptions for each role within the Alembic.
    • Updates employee handbook as needed.
    • Hires and ensures expertise in all staff.
    • Communicates weekly or more often with Board Chair regarding agenda items and any concerns/topics raised by the board.
    • Sends detailed weekly updates on attendance and revenue to the board, with weekly meetings with Board Chair.
    • Creates and implements process for onboarding instructors, employees, and volunteers.
    • Utilizes Gusto to ensure all employees and instructors are inputted and compliant.
    • Oversees all Google Drive, IT, and phone resources.
    • Ensures all members utilize Momence to register for classes.
    • Utilizes reports from Momence to make any instructional changes and to guide marketing strategy.
    • Works with finance to generate and present reports on instructional hours/attendance/revenue.

    Production (10%)

    • Ensures recruitment, training, and involvement of employees and volunteers.
    • Oversees and manages day-to-day operations of the Alembic.
    • Gathers feedback on quality of programming and ensure high quality of events.
    • Provides guidance on all aspects of program management.
    • Upholds high standards for the Alembic and when on duty, ensures that the space meets high standards of cleanliness and functionality including safe environment, optimum heat and humidity, and clean and clutter-free surroundings (specifically wiping down table tops, sweeping, removing flyers of past events, picking up trash off of all rooms and bathroom, take out trash, run dishwasher, stock clean dishes).
    • Acts as backup for any program crew as necessary.

    Qualifications and Requirements

    • At least 5 years working at a senior level at an events location, yoga studio, gym, meditation center, or others
    • Be on site at least 5 days a week
    • Genuine relationship-builder who builds trust quickly
    • Availability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and select special events
    • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs
    • Experience managing and leading paid and volunteer staff, including hiring, onboarding, and training
    • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute campaigns that drive engagement, brand awareness, and revenue growth
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills
    • Demonstrated experience working with CRM systems to manage customer data and interactions, Momence experience preferred
    • Ability to manage budgets and perform basic financial tracking
    • Experience collaborating with a board of directors
    • Passion for meditation practices

    Compensation and Benefits

    This is a full-time position with a competitive salary and benefits package. The Managing Director must have flexibility to work on weekends and evenings. This role is in person in Berkeley, CA.

    The salary range for this role is $100-120k.
