    Controller (Part-Time / Annual Contract)

    Operations Department

    Reporting to: Chief Operations Officer

    Part-Time, Non-Exempt

    Location: Remote or Hybrid eligible (Washington, DC or New York)

    Hourly Rate Range: $55-$65/hour

    Kennedy Human Rights Center seeks an experienced, part-time Controller to support the oversight of our accounting operations, financial reporting, and consult for annual audit preparation. This role is ideal for a highly skilled accounting professional with 5-7+ years of nonprofit experience, looking for a part-time consulting opportunity.

    The Controller will work closely with our full-time Staff Accountant (based in DC), providing oversight, guidance, and review of financials, ensuring accuracy and compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.

With a $13M annual budget and a team of 40 staff, our organization pursues human rights through strategic litigation, advocacy, education, and partnership with frontline communities globally.     Scope of Work:

    Financial Oversight & Review

    • Review accounting documentation and supporting balance sheet accounts prepared by the Staff Accountant.
    • Ensure balance sheet accounts, and unusual transactions are accurately recorded.
    • Prepare monthly financial statements with commentary for COO and board.

    Audit & Compliance Support

    • Prepare audit schedules and documentation, including net asset schedules and investment earnings.
    • Review the audit schedules prepared by the Staff Accountant.
    • Provide senior-level support for audits, grant monitoring reviews, and grant-related audit requests.
    • Serve as a subject-matter expert on GAAP compliance and nonprofit accounting best practices.

    Reporting & Analysis

    • Develop dashboards and reporting to highlight organizational financial performance.
    • Support Board Finance Committee reporting and analysis.
    • Provide ad hoc financial advice, guidance, and oversight on operational or project-specific issues.

    Grant & Fund Accounting

    • Advise on accounting for restricted funds, allocations, and special campaigns (annual giving, capital, and endowment campaigns).
    • Ensure accurate reporting and compliance for donor-restricted grants and contributions.
    • Do your part in keeping our operations running smoothly - tracking your hours and submitting timecards in a timely manner.

    A successful candidate must have the following skills and experiences:

    • Active CPA license required.
    • 5-7+ years of nonprofit accounting experience with US-based 501(c)(3) organizations.
    • Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and financial statement preparation.
    • Practical experience with QuickBooks Online.
    • Experience with restricted funding, grants, special campaigns, and donor reporting.
    • Proven experience preparing schedules for audits and supporting external reviewers.
    • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently/remotely.
    • Excellent communication skills and the ability to provide clear guidance to non-accountants.
    • Experience developing dashboards and performance reporting is a plus.
    • A demonstrated passion and interest for KHRC’s mission and aligned commitment to community-centered advocacy;
    • Exceptional time management, including the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects at once;
    • High level of integrity and discretion in handling confidential information;

    Availability and Compensation:

    • Available 10 hours per week;
    • This position will be an annual contract through the end of 2026 with the opportunity for annual renewal each calendar year.
    • Part-time; hourly pay rate of $55-65/hour;
    • This position is eligible for overtime pay.
