    JOB TITLE: Paralegal

    REPORTS TO: Legal Director

    STATUS: Non-Exempt; Full Time

    THE ORGANIZATION

    The Learning Rights Law Center (LRLC) is a non-profit organization that provides direct legal services to students who are not receiving an equitable public education, runs an Education Rights Clinic for broad legal consultation support, and engages in a variety of community training and outreach efforts to further the organization’s mission and goals. LRLC is located near downtown Los Angeles, but is presently functioning in a hybrid (remote and in-person) capacity. The organization focuses its efforts on the most vulnerable and low-income K-12 students in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura Counties.

    MISSION

    Learning Rights Law Center fights to achieve education equity for underserved families in Los Angeles and surrounding counties. We provide free legal representation, advice, advocacy and training to families and communities whose children, as a consequence of disability or discrimination, have been denied equal access to a public education.

    POSITION SUMMARY

    This position provides a Paralegal with the opportunity to serve a public interest nonprofit organization. The Paralegal will be expected to independently carry out all responsibilities for a standard case load for direct representation matters, support the Legal Director and Staff Attorneys to manage their caseloads including review and analysis of documents, overseeing due process filings, drafting/proofreading of pleadings and subpoenas, drafting records requests and demand letters for records, preparing witness lists and exhibit binders for due process hearings, contacting potential experts and services providers, assisting attorneys with invoice preparation and case correspondence, assisting with potential and existing client consultations, and participating in settlement monitoring as needed. The Paralegal will also be asked, from time to time, to support intake workflow, act as an interpreter, translate documents, and to engage in community outreach and training programs.

    The starting rate for this role is $29.40 an hour.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Paralegal Certificate or comparable experience
    • Relevant experience in law office administration and support
    • Knowledge of/experience preparing pleadings for and satisfying local rules in federal and California courts
    • Knowledge of/experience with paper- and e-filing protocols in federal and California courts, as well as PACER and DocketBird
    • Excellent written and verbal communication, time management, organizational, and computer skills, with strong attention to detail
    • Spanish Language Proficiency Required – This position requires the paralegal to be able to engage in direct client communications with Spanish speakers and to provide interpretation to support attorneys within LRLC.
    • Strong interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
    • Self-motivated and resourceful, with the ability to learn quickly and independently and exercise good judgement
    • Ability to efficiently manage multiple assignments and projects, task plan, and execute
    • Ability to anticipate obstacles, tackle problems as they arise, and meet deadlines
    • Strong analytic and problem-solving skills
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office, Adobe, and video conferencing platforms; current proficiency requirements include, but are not limited to:
      • SharePoint
      • Outlook, utilizing extensions
      • Excel and Word
      • Data tracking and reporting, including creating and modifying spreadsheets in Excel or other applications
      • Supporting hosting videoconferencing in Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and other platforms
    • Familiarity with court e-filing systems and docket management platforms
    • Familiarity with case management applications (Clio)
    • General tech fluency, with the ability to quickly learn new programs as needed and willingness to self-study and/or undergo a recommended course of study to become familiar with current or newly adopted programs
    • Experience with Google Workspace
    • Provide empathetic and culturally competent support to low-income families and persons with disabilities
    • Commitment to equity, inclusion and the rights of students with disabilities
    • Ability to handle confidential information with tact and discretion

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Three or more years of paralegal experience
    • Experience with data analysis
    • Case management experience, with a track record of overseeing multiple attorneys’ caseloads in a dynamic environment
    • Relevant knowledge or experience with special education and/or disability discrimination and/or children’s rights law

    JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Data Gathering for Attorneys
      • Work closely with legal staff to gather relevant information from intakes and clients
      • Communicate with clients regarding case updates, document requests, and procedural guidance
      • Records and documents review and analysis
      • Charting and reporting data to attorneys
      • Research assignments
    • Case support and management
      • Assist attorneys in preparing for due process hearings, mediations, and administrative proceedings
      • Draft pleadings, motions, discovery requests/responses, correspondence
      • Prepare evidence packets
      • Draft, file, monitor and manage administrative agency complaints
      • Maintain and organize case files, ensuring all files are accurate and up-to-date, properly labeled and located
      • Track deadlines and manage litigation calendars.

        • Time opening-to-resolution-to-closing
      • Preparing and finalizing pleadings for OAH and Court filings including formatting, completeness and conformity with Local Rules
      • Direct assistance to clients to obtain and utilize funding and services obtained through litigation and advocacy.
    • Administrative and Organizational Support
      • Coordinate with expert witnesses, and service providers
      • Assist with grant reporting and date collection related to case outcomes and client demographics
      • Support outreach and education efforts, including Know-Your-Rights trainings and community events
      • Backup monitoring for law clerk and volunteer projects
      • Track attorney productivity and revenues, and internal statistical data relevant to our productivity targets
