Welcome to volunteer or intern in Tanzania! We have been supporting the communities since 1996. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn how to perform development tasks in African society. While working, you will encounter new and exciting cultures and enjoy Africa's stunning natural landscapes and diverse wildlife.

Tanzania's public health sector faces challenges like high rates of HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis, but it has also made significant strides in areas like under-5 mortality and national-scale treatment programs. The country is working towards universal healthcare, with the government allocating substantial funds to the sector, and international donors also contributing. Public health initiatives focus on disease prevention, treatment, and improving access to care, with a strong emphasis on community-based interventions and digital health solutions.

Key Aspects of Public Health Internship in Tanzania:

Health System Structure:

Tanzania's health system is organised in a referral pyramid, starting from village health posts to district hospitals and specialised facilities.

• Key Health Challenges:
• HIV/AIDS, Malaria, and Tuberculosis: Tanzania has been actively working to combat these diseases through prevention, treatment, and care programs, including a large-scale antiretroviral treatment program for HIV.
• Maternal and Newborn Mortality: Despite progress, maternal and newborn mortality rates remain high, with challenges related to access to quality care, particularly in rural areas.

Public Health Initiatives:

National Health Policies: The government has developed policies and strategies to address various health priorities, including maternal and newborn health, child health, and disease control.

Digital Health Initiatives: Tanzania is investing in digital health technologies to improve data collection, analysis, and service delivery.

Community-Based Interventions: Many public health programs emphasise community participation and engagement to improve health outcomes.

Collaboration and Partnerships:

Government and International Donors: The government collaborates with international donors, such as USAID and the CDC, to support various health programs and initiatives.

Research Institutions: Tanzania has strong partnerships with research institutions, such as the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, to advance public health knowledge and practice.

NGOs and Civil Society: Organisations like the Tanzania Centre for Public Health (TCPH) play a crucial role in research, community interventions, and advocacy for better health policies.

Specific Examples:

The Tanzania Public Health Bulletin is a key platform for disseminating evidence-based public health information to various stakeholders.

The Data Use Partnership (DUP) is a government-led initiative designed to enhance healthcare by promoting the more effective use of health information.

The Africa Academy for Public Health (AAPH) facilitates north-south and south-south learning and collaboration in public health research and training.

The National Public Health Laboratory offers diagnostic services, quality assurance, and capabilities for responding to outbreaks.

The program is ongoing, and you can join at any time, term of your choice.

The project is situated in the beautiful and tranquil Madale village, located 30km from the city centre in the Dar es Salaam region.

Note that Erasmus+ funding can be applied for the Tanzania training. You can ask your student office about the grant options.

The Benefits and Perks are as follows:

Accommodation with breakfast and dinner is EUR 175 per week and is a personal expense. However, the cost drops to EUR 125 weekly after the first 13 weeks.

Airport transfers from and to EUR 120 are a personal expense.

The charity visa for immigration is USD 50 and is a personal expense. A VISA with multiple entries of less than 12 months is USD 250.

We pay you a USD 50 per month stipend. It is small but 2x Tanzania's national minimum wage. The minimum participation time for assistance is four weeks.

Flights are a personal expense.

Local transportation in Tanzania is a personal expense, but it is small if needed.
