Support women’s education and empowerment while gaining hands-on experience in international development.
Join Women in Leadership (WIL Uganda) and help deliver adult literacy programmes and school-based education initiatives in a rural Ugandan community.
About the Organisation
Women in Leadership (WIL Uganda) is a grassroots, women-led organisation based in Busembatia, Eastern Uganda.
Our mission: to dismantle inequality and empower women and girls to exercise their rights, build economic independence, and lead within their communities.
About the Role
As a Women’s Literacy & Education Intern, you will support our adult literacy programme by designing and delivering interactive learning sessions for women in the community.
You will also lead a “Book Event” programme across local secondary schools to promote literacy and confidence among young people.
This is a hands-on role where you will design and deliver sessions — not just observe.
What You’ll Do
- Design and deliver adult literacy sessions for women
- Facilitate interactive learning workshops (reading, writing, confidence building)
- Deliver “Book Event” sessions in local secondary schools
- Adapt teaching materials to suit different literacy levels
- Work closely with local staff and community leaders
- Support programme development and outreach

Requirements
- Enrolled in or completed a university degree
- Interest in education, literacy, or international development
- Teaching experience or TEFL qualification is an advantage (not required)
- Strong communication and initiative
- Willingness to adapt to rural community life
- Laptop required for placement work
Programme Duration & Fundraising Model
(Fundraising-based internship — not a fee)
- 1 month: £1,650
- 2–3 months: £2,450
- 6 months: £3,750

Location & Living
- You will live in Busembatia village (Eastern Uganda) and be fully immersed in community life.
- Accommodation is provided in safe, shared volunteer housing.
- All meals are included Monday–Friday during placement.
- During weekends, you can travel to nearby Jinja, known for activities such as rafting, kayaking and cultural experiences.
