    Trust for the National Mall Internships (Various Focus Areas Available)

    Compensation: $18/hr

    Term: late-January - mid/late-May 2026, flexible

    Expectation: 10 - 20 hours per week

    Work Location: Hybrid work environment, with at least 2 days / week in office, 1717 Pennsylvania Ave NW

    Description:

    Interns at the Trust for the National Mall support the implementation of the Trust's goals and strategies by serving in one of the following focus areas: Philanthropy Operations, Events and Stewardship, Philanthropic Systems and Training, Marketing and Communications, or Projects and Public Engagement. Interns will gain an understanding of the complex operations of a nonprofit and will have the opportunity to participate in diverse projects while learning and gaining skills to support their career aspirations. While the focus areas give an overview of projects, incumbents may support work from other focus areas as interested and available.

    Intern Focus Areas:

    1. Philanthropy Operations: Working closely with the Philanthropy Operations team, the Philanthropy Operations Intern will support the day-to-day fundraising activities of the Philanthropy team. This internship will provide an opportunity to gain broad exposure to nonprofit fundraising. Ideal candidates are detail-oriented and interested in learning about nonprofit development. Although Training in Salesforce and prospect research will be provided, prior research and/or data management experience, as well as knowledge of Microsoft Office, is preferred.
      1. Responsibilities: Donor research and prospecting, supporting data entry and hygiene in Salesforce, special events assistance, donor stewardship/correspondence support.
    2. Events and Stewardship: Working closely with both the Senior Director of Special Events and the Donor Relations Manager, the Events and Stewardship intern will work collaboratively across teams to assist in event planning and execution. This intern will also work within the Philanthropy Operations team to assist in supporting donor recognition, donor engagement, and crafting engaging communications and marketing pieces for donor recognition and stewardship correspondence. During the Spring, events can include donor receptions, public engagement programs, small concerts, and our annual signature event, America's Ball for The Mall. Ideal candidates are detail-oriented, interested in learning about events, donor relations and stewardship and excited for America's 250th anniversary! Although training will be provided, prior data management and CRM systems experience specifically in Salesforce, Zkipster, MailChimp and Microsoft Office Suite is preferred.
      1. Responsibilities: researching event opportunities, supporting data entry and cleanup in Salesforce, creating event briefings, providing on the ground support at events, and assisting in event-related communications including invitations, website postings, and social media. Additionally, assisting in preparing routine donor correspondence and personalized donor appreciation materials, assisting in supporting RSVPs tracking and guest name collection, supporting special project execution, and supporting routine and ad-hoc projects to update and/or standardize data.
    3. Philanthropic Systems and Training: The Philanthropic Systems and Training Intern will support the Philanthropy Team with resources that empower staff to effectively navigate the Salesforce CRM and other tools. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in developing user guides, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and engaging training materials while developing an understanding of fundraising systems.
      1. Responsibilities: create and update user-friendly guides and FAQs, support the development of SOPs, assist with the creation of training materials, gather user feedback to identify opportunities for improvement, and collaborate with Philanthropy Team members to ensure resources are accurate and accessible.
    4. Marketing and Communications: As part of this team, the Marketing and Communications intern will assist in the day-to-day management of the Trust's digital communications by creating and refining content. The intern will work closely with the marketing and communications, philanthropy, and events teams to engage a broad audience with the Trust's mission and will help support annual traditions on the National Mall.
      1. Responsibilities: monitoring media coverage and updating media lists, performing website updates, building National Mall phot library, developing content for external communication vehicles, aiding in development of the Trust's communications calendar, preparing social media communications and tracking social engagement, and assisting in event research and preparation.
    5. Projects and Public Engagement: The Projects and Public Engagement intern will collaborate across teams to enhance visitor services and engagement at the US Park Police Horse Stables & Education Center and the Lockkeeper's House. The intern will lead the creation of prototypes for object-based learning kits or one-off educational programs at each site, extending the work of student-led evaluations conducted in summer 2025. The intern may also directly engage visitors through staffing National Mall sites and supporting spring events and programs. This internship is ideal for someone studying K-12 education, who is interested in expanding their skills and understanding of learning in exhibits, intergenerational learning, and working with volunteers and the general public. Experience with graphic design programs is a plus.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Current college (undergraduate or graduate) student or within 1 year of graduating.
    • Able to commit at least 10-20 hours / week during normal office hours (Monday - Friday). Occasional weekend or evening availability may be required.
    • Able to work in person at the Trust for the National Mall office at least 2 days per week.
    • Able to work independently in a fast-paced environment, take initiative, and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office applications.
    • Strong connection to the Trust for the National Mall mission, our National Parks, and your preferred focus area.
