    About JaW

    Justice at Work (JaW) is a nonprofit legal aid provider that is part of the Pennsylvania Legal Aid

    Network. Our mission is to support low-wage workers as they pursue economic and social

    justice. We advance our mission through legal services (focusing on immigration and

    employment law), community education and outreach, and client-centered advocacy. We seek to

    address clients’ challenges based on the unique circumstances of each individual, guided by their

    perspectives and goals; we recognize that justice is a process; and we believe that the experience

    we create with our clients as we guide them through the legal process is as important as the

    ultimate legal outcomes we seek to bring about. We have offices in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia

    and provide services throughout Pennsylvania. Many of our clients are Spanish-speaking; reside

    in small cities, towns and agricultural and/or migrant communities across the state; and may

    otherwise not have access to legal services.

    About the Internship

    JaW seeks 1L or 2L law student interns to join our dynamic statewide team of advocates working

    to advance the rights of low-wage workers throughout Pennsylvania. Substantive areas of work

    for summer interns include wage and hour cases; unsafe or unhealthy work conditions;

    employment discrimination; protection of workers’ rights to engage in protected concerted

    activity free from retaliation; and immigration relief for survivors of labor trafficking and other

    workplace crimes. Interns may also collaborate in community education and outreach.

    Intern responsibilities may include:

    • Conducting client intake interviews;
    • Participating in community education and outreach;
    • Researching and writing legal memoranda;
    • Drafting complaints, pleadings, or briefs for filing with state and federal courts and/or with administrative bodies (DOL, NLRB, EEOC, and state equivalents);
    • Drafting affidavits in support of immigration applications;
    • Drafting demand letters to adverse parties;
    • Conducting fact investigations;
    • Participating in meetings with clients, partner organizations, governmental agencies; and
    • Observing hearings or trials, depending on availability.

    Qualifications

    Applicants must currently be enrolled in law school. Candidates should have:

    • Excellent research and writing skills;
    • Ability to balance multiple projects concurrently;
    • Commitment to social justice and to the client communities we serve; and
    • Initiative, energy, enthusiasm, and a sense of humor.

    Spanish fluency is preferred, but other candidates will be considered.
