AIDS Foundation Chicago (AFC) is seeking a creative and motivated individual to intern in its Policy & Advocacy Department with Pride Action Tank (PAT). This is an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience while working at an active, upbeat non-profit.

Pride Action Tank is a think tank and project incubator that co-creates opportunities with LGBTQ+ community members and our allies to dream, define, and enact strategies that create conditions for our collective liberation.

The Pride Action Tank Intern will learn about a wide range of projects focused on issues or initiatives impacting the LGBTQ+ community, including the Connection to Care Learning Collaborative, Community Restroom Access Project, OUTAging, and education and outreach for various other projects. Pride Action Tank Intern will also have the opportunity to learn about HIV/AIDS prevention, care and advocacy, and other issues related to AFC’s mission.

This intern will intern directly with the Pride Action Tank Executive Director and Special Projects Senior Manager.

This internship is designed to be both educational and practical. In this internship, the intern will learn how to take skills acquired in the educational setting and apply them in a professional setting. Upon completion of this internship, the Pride Action Tank Intern should have an understanding of the role that policy and advocacy play in the nonprofit setting and of LGBTQ+ programs and issues, with a focus on the most marginalized within LGBTQ+ communities.

The Pride Action Tank Intern will learn or gain skills among the following:

    • Broad issues within the LGBTQ+ community
    • Nonprofits, organizational and health systems
    • Public policy concerning LGBTQ+ communities and people living with and vulnerable to HIV
    • Project tracking and time management
    • Research and notetaking methods
    • Outreach and community mobilization

    Qualifications:

    • Current or recent enrollment in a graduate or undergraduate degree program with an interest and aptitude to work in public health, social work, communications and/or public policy
    • Interest in and familiarity with LGBTQ+, aging and HIV issues
    • Interest in equity, social justice, and systems change
    • Able to work both independently and in a collaborative environment
    • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
    • Enjoy working with the public in community settings
    • Must be flexible and open to new opportunities to engage a variety of stakeholders
