Legal Aid of North Carolina Farmworker Unit

Legal Aid of North Carolina's Farmworker Unit provides free civil legal services to low income migrant farmworkers and their dependents.

The Unit has a long history of zealous representation of farmworker clients. From 1978 to the early 80s, the predecessor to the unit helped eradicate peonage and involuntary servitude among farmworkers in NC. From 1990-2004 the program fought egregious contract violations suffered by temporary "guestworkers" on H-2A visas, culminating in an historic collective bargaining agreement in 2004 between a giant NC labor broker and a farm labor union(FLOC). Today the unit strives to protect workers from unsafe working conditions, secure unpaid wages, and combat labor trafficking in agriculture.
