The Shawnee Indian Mission is dedicated to preserving a complex chapter of American history by honoring Indigenous stories, fostering education, and engaging our community through thoughtful stewardship of this national historical site.

    Acerca de

The Shawnee Indian Mission State Historic Site is a place where history, culture, and community come together. Established in 1839 as a manual training school for Native American children, the Mission holds a complex and significant place in the history of Kansas and the broader story of the United States. Today, it stands as a preserved landmark, dedicated to education, reflection, and connection.

The success of the Mission is built on the dedication of our loyal and committed board members and the tireless efforts of our passionate volunteers. These individuals bring their talents, time, and hearts to ensure the Mission thrives as a place where stories of the past are told and the future is shaped. From hosting events to maintaining the historic grounds, their contributions are invaluable.

Whether you’re visiting for a family outing, participating in a workshop, or attending one of our community events, the Shawnee Indian Mission is here because of the people who believe in its mission. Together with the Kansas State Historical Society, the City of Fairway, and the Shawnee Indian Mission Foundation, we work to preserve and share this unique heritage while creating opportunities to engage, learn, and grow.
