Description : The Chatham-Avalon Ministries Food Pantry located at 8601 South State Street, is an approved 501(c )3 agency in partnership with the Greater Chicago Food Depository. The Pantry is a full-service entity that provides food service to 200+ clients on Saturday mornings for 12 months of the year from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and holds nutritional, employment, and education (preparatory elementary/high school, pre-college and vocational) workshops), as well as food prep classes and age-appropriate sustainable-living services. Population Served: African American, veterans (ages 35-76), and recent immigrant population (Hispanic) - specifically -- single mothers under the age of thirty-five, female grandparent-headed households, the homeless, and senior citizens make up two-thirds of our clientele and in the past year we experienced a significant increase in the male population ages 35-45. There are approximately 132,230 families who reside in our target areas and 76% of these families have more than 5 children residing in the household. Thirty-two percent are below poverty, 44% did not complete high school, and 52% have non-workers in the family (US Census). The average family income deficit for target communities is $10,886 and 43% receive some form of social security or public assistance. No data on the recent immigrant population.
