The Mark Morris Institute (MMI) is dedicated to being a leading resource in nutritional education for the veterinary profession with the goal of promoting optimal companion animal health.
The Mark Morris Institute (MMI) was established in 1993 to honor the legacy of veterinarian Dr. Mark Morris Sr. who believed that proper nutrition is the cornerstone of optimal pet health. Dr. Morris was among the first veterinarians to establish a small-animal-exclusive practice in the U.S. and played a leading role in the establishment of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). However, Dr. Morris is best known for his groundbreaking contributions to veterinary nutrition - developing the first pet foods designed to help manage disease. His innovations have significantly improved the quality of life for countless pets worldwide.
Over the last several decades, MMI has led the charge in veterinary nutrition education for the profession, serving over 2,000 veterinary students annually as the only independent non-profit [501(c)(3)] organization of its kind.
Our team of board-certified veterinary nutritionists and instructional designers work diligently to curate the most up-to-date, objective research and data on small animal nutrition and package it into high-quality learning materials. We design and deliver current, non-commercial nutrition education through lectures, practical exercises, case discussions, and e-learning modules which can be combined to create a customized clinical nutrition course at no cost to qualifying veterinary schools. We have also published several editions of the Small Animal Clinical Nutrition textbook and have developed the innovative new MMI Nutrition Guide which simplifies therapeutic diet comparisons and recommendations for veterinarians.
As we grow and evolve to meet the increasing demand for evidence-based nutrition education for the entire community, we aim to shape the future of veterinary medicine. We help equip veterinary nurses/technicians, veterinary students, new graduates and experienced veterinarians with the latest knowledge, empowering them to better understand and promote the optimal diet, and therefore health, of every patient.
