Lead Safe DC

Although lead poisoning is preventable in children, it has remained a major health hazard in many communities across the nation. In Washington D.C. the presence of lead is a significant problem given the age and condition of the housing stock, leaving thousands of children at risk. The NNCC has been a leader in preventing lead poisoning since the year 2000. NNCC created Lead Safe D.C., a broad education initiative and grass-roots public policy effort to teach pregnant mothers and mothers of young children how they can take steps to prevent their child from becoming lead poisoned. The lead poisoning prevention outreach targets mothers in D.C.’s wards 1, 2 ,4 – where rates of childhood lead poisoning are the highest.
