Using public land, Self Help Hunger Program has been offering free food, free clothing, and free access to services for over 14 years. Based on free labor, dedication and endless love for humankind, Self Help Hunger Program stands as a testimony to the fact that when communities are left to care for themselves they can truly thrive.
We have three main programs:
- food justice program. For over 15 years, we've been offering free warm meals twice per week. For the last 3 years we've been offering free fresh produce and pantry essentials at Driver Plaza in North Oakland. We serve over 400 people weekly by providing access to healthy, fresh produce to families who otherwise would go with out it.
- Self determination. Folx joining our program undergo training to prepare them for the real world: work training, career development, housing search, mental health support. We support and offer access to resources for people to help themselves through apprenticeship programs, housing and health providers.
- Housing program. We represent and advocate for people who are trying to transition out of homelessness or who are at risk of being homeless.
