• • Social Awareness Society for Youths (SASY) is a human rights organisation operating functions from Tindivanam, in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. It directly works in the districts of Cuddalore, Villupuram, Erode and Thirupur to protect and promote Dalit Human Rights. It has strategically accompanied Civil & Political Rights, Socio, Economic and Cultural Rights to ensure equality, Justice and social equitable standards of lives of the poor Dalits.

SASY was genesis on 1983 by few like-minded Dalit Rights Activists. The policy declaration of “SASY is to function as a catalyst agent to uphold Human Rights and Justice and hold state accountability by effectively addressing the issue of caste based discrimination, inequality ,Human Rights Violations , miserable poverty widespread and rampant in the state of Tamil Nadu.

Achivement of SASY so far....

497 brutal incidents of caste atrocities effectively addressed and empowered the survivors of caste atrocities to access justice by holding state accountability. Sensitized the government officials and criminal justice system for appropriate measures to prevent such caste atrocities, social exclusion and render justice. 2000 Dalit youth and communities have been capacitated on various human rights laws, legislations and redressal mechanisms. These trained Dalit Human Rights Defenders effectively addressing the incidents of caste atrocities through human rights monitoring and legal interventions. 4 Dalit federations consisted of 2000 members of Dalit communities have emerged and advocating for civil, political , socio, economic and cultural rights in 4 districts. Received 7.5 million rupees as interim compensation to the survivors of caste atrocities from the state. 67 cases of violence against children have been effectively addressed .The first information report (FIR) have registered in 96% of the cases at the police stations among 63% of the cases have filed under the SC/ST PoA Act 1989. Successfully advocated the issue of Dalits with the UN Special Rapporteur on extra Judicial Killings and it has pressured the state to probe many incidents of caste atrocities and discrimination. Created larger visibility to the issues of caste atrocities, social exclusion and human rights violations alarmed the state to take appropriate measures to prevent such kind of inhuman behaviors. The Indian parliament has amended in rules of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989 increased compensation and other monetary relief to the victims. State and National level Advocacy for advancing the rights of Dalits in India through networking with NCDHR,HRLN,ASC, NCSSc/St PoA Act 1989. * Through effective project, finance management, policies and coordination of 3 partners in 6 states through the European Commission project achieved results in 10 states of India * Contributed to Strengthened democratisation, good governance and the rule of law * Contributed to abolition of the death penalty and contributed to combat torture and impunity and support for international tribunals and criminal courts * Contributed to combat racism and xenophobia and discrimination against minorities and indigenous people * Launched 4 campaigns that Promoting Justice and the Rule of Law, Fostering a culture of human rights, Promoting the democratic process, and Advancing equality, tolerance and peace * Formed Citizens Audit Group (CAG) consisted of eminent person sustained engagements of lobbying and advocacy with the statutory commissions on behalf of the victims of caste atrocities and access to criminal justice system. * 1480 incidents of brutal forms of caste atrocities have been effectively addressed and sensitised the government machineries to pay adequate response to the incidents of caste atrocities and prevent such incidents. * 12 million rupees have received from the government as an interim compensation to the victims of caste atrocities and rehabilitated * The media has adequately sensitised and mobilised public pressure through wider coverages. It has brought greater visibility to the issue of caste based discriminationThe caste matters and discrimination have been addressed in the UN Forum such as economic and social council (ECOSOC) the universal periodic review (UPR) meeting and submitted shadow reports to UN CERD sub committee
* 57 houses have been constructed for the affected Dalits and ensured their lives with human dignity * The affected Dalit community have been successfully engaging small trade and enhanced entrepreneurship skills * The wooden furniture manufacturing unit was emerged in the rural and the affected Dalit community specialised by acquiring knowledge on specific trade * The caste based stigmatised jobs of Dalit community was shifted to dignified jobs through enhancing life skills * Totally around 30000 thousand people have benefited through this effort and impacted among more than 19% of the Dalits in the total population of Tamil Nadu * The government has ordered free permanent hosing schemes for the benefit of poor and marginalised through our effective advocacy and campaign on housing rights * Children Movement for Climate Justice (CMCJ) has been sustaining the impacts in the field, accelerating Rights and Justice * Coastal Action Network campaigning, advancing the rights of Dalits in the coastal area through engaging effective lobbying and Advocacy with the state * State and National level Advocacy for advancing the rights of Dalits in India by effective networking with NCDHR,HRLN,ASC, NCSSc/St PoA Act 1989

A cashew processing unit was established with complete infrastructure and other ecquipements The cashew processing company was registered under the Indian producer Company Act. The company was completely governed and managed by the Dalit women The Dalit women were the labour for several centuries and became owner by managing business through this project The cashew processing company has given continuous employment for 25 Dalit women and their skills are specialised It is historical and significant achievement since the Dalit are forbidden through social law to engage trade and free from their sigmatised caste based occupation 100 farmers have capacitated technically for high yield in cashew cultivation. Around 30000 Dalits have covered through the micro insurance programmes 500 Dalit women have capacitated on reproductive health rights and litrecy through education for livelihood program (E4L) Children Movement for Climate Justice (CMCJ) has been sustaining the impacts in the field, accelerating Rights and Justice Coastal Action Network campaigning, advancing the rights of Dalits in the coastal area through engaging effective lobbying and Advocacy with the state State and National level Advocacy for advancing the rights of Dalits in India by effective networking with NCDHR,HRLN,ASC, NCSSc/St PoA Act 1989 Capacitated and promoted 40 Dalit women entrepreneurs in the rural villages A space created for sustainable livelihood which enhanced the lives of 40 Dalit families directly and 200 families indirectly. Created livelihood opportunity for 40 rural poor Dalit families, eradicated poverty and increased their standard of living with human dignity. Liberated 40 rural poor Dalit families from the socially stigmatized caste based occupations through imparting skills on trade, Candle Making techniques and strategies.
