Firehouse Quilts of Colorado, Inc.

Firehouse Quilts is a group of caring volunteers that make and donate small snuggle quilts and fleece blankies to our local firehouses., battered women's shelters, low-income hospitals, local social service groups. The quilts are given to children in crisis or in need.

The firefighters give the quilts to children of all ages that have been in a fire, car wreck or other traumatic event. Receiving these blankies and quilts help to calm them and take their mind off of their problems for awhile.

Firehouse Quilts was started in August 2003, we've supplied quilts to over 31  fire districts in Colorado and more than 20 other emergency organizations that serve children. We donate an average of 1,000 quilts and blankies each year. We have expanded into giving quilts for children in crisis or in need to battered womens shelters, victim advocates offices, Action Care Ambulance and local hospitals.

The pieced quilts can be made from any style quilt block or pattern available. We use 100% cotton with bright, cheerful colors and children themes. The only restriction we have is the size. We need to keep the size around 45" square. They can be hand-quilted, machine-quilted, tied, tacked, etc. The batting is usually thin cotton but we've used polyester batting at times too.

We use children's theme fleece in 45" squares, round off the corners and just serge around the edges for the toddlers and infants. They go together really fast but the fleece is expensive so we don't get as much of it as we'd like.

Our Sew Days are open to anyone wishing to join our efforts in making charity quilts. We meet at the Northridge Rec Center, 8801 S Broadway in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. On the 1st Thursday of each month, we sew from 4:30pm-7pm; on the 3rd Thursdays, we meet from 12:30pm-4pm.
