  • Acerca de

Founded in 2017, Hypertext Magazine & Studio (HMS) is an arts and culture nonprofit—partially funded by Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), Illinois Humanities, NEA, and Illinois Arts Council—firmly rooted in the belief that engaging the creative mind is essential to both individual and community health.

HMS combines social justice work with literary citizenship and, to this end, offer two programs: publishing and teaching.

    PUBLISHING

Since 2010, we have published celebrated and emerging authors in our nationally recognized print and online literary journal, Hypertext Review and HypertextMag.com.

    TEACHING

HMS offers free writing workshops to Chicago-area adults—in collaboration with local nonprofits—looking to learn techniques to tell and write personal narratives and fictional stories.

These classes have already served over 300 adults rebuilding their lives after homelessness, poverty, incarceration, violence, recovering from substance use disorders or from any life setback. We guide our students to listen to their voice and write their truth. These same skills not only help students express themselves creatively, but also believe in the power of their own narratives and become workforce ready—since they will know how to advocate for themselves and write persuasive cover letters and impactful resumes. In 2019, we began publishing our nonprofit students’ writing in both our print and online journal.
