Overview

Minneapolis College Prep will open in August of 2012 with an inaugural class of 150 freshman students. MCP will occupy the Lincoln Community Building at 2131 12th Avenue North.

The foundation of Minneapolis College Prep is providing a structured, disciplined, and safe environment for a rigorous, college preparatory education. The core values of the school are scholarship, discipline, and honor. Our goal is for 100% of our students to attend and graduate from selective 4-year universities. We believe in the power of high expectations and accountability to create a school where attending college is the expectation, not the exception.

All students are admitted via lottery with the only requirements being that they complete the application on time, and successfully meet their 8th grade graduation requirements. Minneapolis College Prep is a public charter school authorized by Minneapolis Public Schools.

History

In 2010, Minneapolis Public Schools went about researching effective school networks and models to select one that would result in dramatic and positive academic achievement for students in Minneapolis. After a thorough search that involved several visits by key administrators from MPS to various sites, the District was impressed by the success of the Noble Network model in Chicago, Illinois and worked with Noble Network administrators so that a replication of Noble would be a reality for Minneapolis, Minnesota. Minneapolis Public Schools is the authorizer of Minneapolis College Prep.

97% of the Noble Network’s student population is minority, 89% of their student population qualifies for free and reduced lunch, and at least 80% of their students enter into 9th grade at least two grade levels behind. For the past two years, all Noble campuses with juniors and seniors (7 in total) have ranked in the top ten of non-selective, open enrollment schools in Chicago Public Schools. 100% of Noble seniors graduate from high school. 96% of their students enroll and enter college. All Noble Network schools are public charter schools and admit their students via lottery.

It is this model that MCP will be bringing to the community of north Minneapolis. The leader of MCP is Angela Chang, who has worked as both a teacher at the original Noble Street campus and as an administrator at the Pritzker College Prep Noble campus and brings years of experience teaching and leading in areas of high poverty.
