The mission of Indian Ocean University is to prepare broadly educated, technologically proficient, and highly productive citizens to attain meaningful careers, in-order to enjoy enriched lives, and to make contributions to a security, growth and rebuilding this nation through education. Founded on the principle to provide optimal access to high quality, higher education, affordable and relevant degree, and career and community education to enhance the lives of our students, the economic development and contribute stability of Somalia. Indian Ocean University believes in the practical value of higher education as a means of economic and personal advancement. IOU respects its students as individuals and as members of diverse groups and is committed to fostering student success.

Indian Ocean University also abbreviated as IOU is one of the oldest private higher learning institution located in Mogadishu, Somalia. IOU has been educating tomorrow's leaders and will be front line in the efforts to rehabilitate, and educate Somali youth so that they might function as a productive part of society and participate rebuilding the nation.

Indian Ocean University was founded 1993 by a group of Somali scholars with the aim of providing higher education and quality degree and associate degree programs to Somali Students, without going abroad in pursuit of education.
