Ada S. McKinley is driven by its mission to serve the most vulnerable individuals and communities in the Chicago area. Our creed is “changing lives and strengthening communities” and our mission is to serve those, who because of disabilities or other limiting conditions, need help in finding and pursuing paths leading to healthy, productive and fulfilling lives.

The organization was founded as a settlement house in 1919 by Ada Sophia McKinley, a schoolteacher and social reformer, who saw the need to assist veterans returning from World War I and blacks migrating from the South.

McKinley, one of the 10 largest human services organizations in Chicago, serves more than 15,000 people each year at 38 program sites.

The agency recently streamlined its divisional organization down from six divisions to three, which are: Behavioral Health and Clinical Services, Child Development and Youth Services and Employment and Community Support Services.

Services rendered daily include: mental health counseling to more than 3,000 behaviorally challenged, mentally ill or at-risk children and their families, academic tutoring, mentoring and college placement for disadvantaged youth, foster care, special and alternative schooling, Head Start/childcare, and after-school and senior-care and employment training and placement. Through its employment services area, McKinley provides job and life skills training and work placement for 1,500 adults with disabilities and/or economic disadvantages.

McKinley’s foster care services meet the needs of some160 children every year, providing support to families and placement for the most difficult of populations, including troubled adolescents.

Senior care services provide meals, transportation, health screenings, home repairs and weatherization referrals, as well as social outings and recreational programs to more than 125 senior citizens annually.

Ada S. McKinley Community Services, Inc. has at its helm, George Jones, Jr., Executive Director, 312/554-0600.
