Minneapolis Institute of Art

Celebrating its 100thbirthday in 2015, the Minneapolis Institute of Art has been an important source of civic and cultural enrichment for generations of participants. In 1883, 25 community members created the Minneapolis Society of Fine Arts and worked to establish a public art museum for the people of Minnesota, eventually realizing this dream in 1915, when Mia opened its doors to the public. One hundred years after this opening, the museum’s permanent collection has grown to more than 89,000 objects comprising one of the finest wide-ranging art collections in the country.

Annually, the museum welcomes more than half a million visitors of all ages. Mia continues to uphold its commitment to the accessibility of arts, culture, and education through free daily general admission, in addition to presenting a variety of programs, events, and online resources that bring the world’s artistic history and achievements to the public. Mia is one of the largest arts educators in Minnesota, serving more than 200,000 children, families, and adults through educational programs and resources delivered at the museum and beyond its walls.
