Non-native buffelgrass (Pennisetum ciliare), is an increasing challenge for land managers and private property owners, and both the public and private sectors are quickly ramping up to meet this challenge. Removal efforts have accelerated since 2005, the year Arizona Statute R3-4-244 approved listing of buffelgrass as a Regulated and Restricted Noxious Weed and the Pima County Board of Supervisors adopted Resolution Number 2005-165 to manage buffelgrass and other invasive species. Strict ordinances by municipal and county governments also help to eliminate buffelgrass and other invasive species on private property and right-of-ways.

Tucson Clean & Beautiful is helping to continue the work of the Southern Arizona Buffelgrass Coordination Center (SABCC) which was formed in 2008 and closed in 2016. An aggressive outreach effort to inform and engage the general public motivated business leaders to organize a Buffelgrass Policy Forum in July 2008 with 40 decision makers across local, state, and federal agencies.
