Herndon-Reston FISH, Inc. (FISH) is a volunteer, nonsectarian, nonprofit corporation dedicated to providing Friendly Instant Sympathetic Help to local residents in short-term crises. Every year, FISH strives to help thousands of people in all demographics in predominantly very low income levels. FISH responds to requests for rent, utilities, medical items and prescriptions, household items, gasoline and other short term emergency needs. We help to keep people in their homes with necessary utilities, and ensure they have necessary medicine when they get hurt or sick. We work closely with social workers from Fairfax County, local schools, hospitals and other nonprofit organizations. Additionally, we operate an Information & Referral Service providing information on long and short-term assistance sources, and offer a Financial Literacy Class on basic budgeting and money management. We also runThe Bargain Loft - a thrift store providing affordable shopping to the community and fundraising for local residents in short term crises. Finally, FISH supports healthy nutrition through SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) at the Herndon Farmers’ Market, and provides hundreds of holiday food and gift baskets to people in need.
