Changing Lives through Literacy--The mission of Literacy Volunteers of Coconino County is to increase the basic English language and literacy skills of teens and adults in order to improve the quality of personal, economic and community life for all. Our services are delivered by professionally trained volunteers in the community and at our facility, The Literacy Center. We strive to be a resource for the study of adolescent and adult literacy learning.

Who We Serve--Our learners come from all walks of life and from many countries. They are teens and adults who wish to develop basic skills in reading, writing, and conversational English. Some learners have spoken English all their lives, but have not developed the reading and writing skills required to function in our society. Other learners did not grow up speaking English, and wish to develop English language skills.

Our Services:

Drop-In Tutoring Lab

• Volunteer tutors are available to provide immediate service for all learners at our Drop-In Tutoring Lab, The Literacy Center. Our drop in lab has nine computer stations and is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:00pm to 7:00pm. It is a convenient option for learners who have changing or rotating schedules. We offer a variety of resource materials in a friendly atmosphere and are available to anyone who “drops in”.

Center and Community Classes

• Center classes are held on-site at The Literacy Center and cover a variety of topics, such as Citizenship, Pronunciation, Computer Basics, Math for Everyday, and more. We offer these classes in the fall, spring and summer, following a traditional semester schedule.
• Community classes are held in various locations around the community and in the unincorporated areas surrounding Flagstaff. These classes offer English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction for a diverse population and are usually available year-round.

One-to-One Tutoring

• Our staff will occasionally match one trained volunteer with one teen or adult who requires individual instruction or has a specific, short-term goal that needs to be met. Eligibility for this program is determined on a case-by-case basis.

Partnership for Literacy Rehabilitation (PLR)

• This partnership was created with the Coconino County Jail, Juvenile Detention and Adult Probation. Trained volunteers help build literacy and language skills for the incarcerated in the Flagstaff jail and juvenile detention center, and also work with newly-released adults and teens who are on probation.

“True Beginner” Community Enrichment Classes

• These fee-based classes are offered to community members and are designed to help “true beginners” in subjects such as Spanish, Navajo or basic computer use.
