What is People Matter?

People Matter is a nonprofit organization that seeks to empower uplift communities of color through direct service, issue advocacy work, political education, and art.

We aim to create a world where every person is free from the confines, volinces. and restricts of white sumpercay and are able to live in a manner that support their identity and culture.

Our theory of change is that by globally dismantling white supremacy through black and Asian led efforts with a focus on building partnerships with brown and indigos communities we will be able to build a world where everyone can be set free from the strings of White Supremacy.

We hope to do this by providing communities of color with anti-racist education, art empowerment, issue advocacy work, and direct service. We know through our work of breaking the language barrier between communities of color, cross racial cross class programming, and inclusive community planning. Our organizations will be one of the first in the nation to pave the way of freedom for many groups of color.

Mission

Our Mission is to Uplift, Unearth, and Untether people

We do this through political education, issue advocacy work, direct service, and art. Uplifting the community, Unearth things people may not understand race, class, gender, etc. and Untethering people from their former thoughts in order to create a spiritual, mental, and physical freedom.

Programs and Services

Our programs include our Community Language Program, a Cantonese and English dual immersion class that is taught through a social justice lens; our Garden Fellows program which teaches youth ages 11-18 about environmental justice, leadership, and socioemotional learning; our Unlearning Anti-blackness classes which help people unlearn internalized racism; and our Housing Insecure Meal program which provides meals to housing insecure folks. We also work on community campaigns such as advocating for a high school with bilingual services for Chinese immigrant students as well as public housing for low income Black residents. We also run an annual survey where we ask community members what they want and we create programs based on community responses.
