The Field School of Hvar

The Field School of Hvar is an independent enrichment program for children ages 3–15, based in Jelsa on the Adriatic island of Hvar, Croatia. We are building a new kind of community for families — one premised on stewardship, enlightenment, and dignity — in which parents and children alike are nourished by meaningful work, natural beauty, and deep roots in a particular place. Our programs offer year-round place-based education in science, history, mathematics, and literacy, integrated with hands-on projects in farming, boatmaking, artisanship, and outdoor exploration. We believe that children thrive when their education is embedded in real communities and real landscapes. And we believe that families flourish when they belong somewhere, a relationship founded on reciprocity and service.

The Field School of Hvar was founded on the conviction that the way most families live — rushed, rootless, screen-saturated — is not inevitable. We exist on the Adriatic island of Hvar to offer an alternative: a slow, rich, place-bound life in which children are educated by real nature and real culture, and in which parents have the time, community, and inspiration to be fully present.

Our school year runs fall and spring, with a summer camp program in between. Children study biology, ancient history, mathematics, and literacy — but always in dialogue with the island around them. A biology lesson might mean collecting specimens on a limestone hillside. A history lesson might mean handling shards from an active archaeological site. A math lesson might mean measuring timber for a wooden boat.

We are building something larger than a school. Enrolled families live alongside our faculty in the small seaside town of Jelsa, creating a new kind of village. Our projects — a teaching farm, a traditional boatmaking program, a circular fashion initiative, a craft store — are designed not just to educate children but to regenerate the landscape and heritage of Hvar itself. We hold ourselves accountable to measurable outcomes in carbon sequestration, biodiversity, and community well-being.
