Sustainable development of marginalised and vulnerable people to ensure a quality life through empowerment, education, information, infrastructure development, healthcare service and economic self-reliance through convergence of services provided by local self governments.

HISTORY OF THE ORGANIZATION:

Sabuj Sangha, a non-profit non-government organization was established in one of the remotest parts of India, amidst the largest mangrove vegetation and the largest delta of the world, the Sundarbans. It was registered under the Society Registration Act in 1975. Though the Sundarbans primarily comprises of dense forests and ferocious wildlife, 54 of the total 102 islands have been inhabited by a population of above 4 million people. After the registration as a voluntary organization it gradually started taking up various rural development works taking beneficiary group into confidence. With over three decades of service towards socio-economic development of vulnerable communities through entirely participatory and unconventional methods of intervention, the organization has been successful in addressing its mission towards ‘sustainable development of marginalized and vulnerable people to ensure a quality life through empowerment, education, information, infrastructure development, healthcare service and economic self-reliance through convergence of services provided by local self governments’. The major areas being addressed are health and nutrition, child education and protection, livelihood and women empowerment, water, sanitation & hygiene education and environment and disaster response.

GEOGRAPHICAL AREA OF OPERATION (RURAL AND URBAN)

RURAL AREA OF OPERATION:

The rural operational area of Sabuj Sangha in Mathurapur I & II and Pathar Pratima Blocks in Sundarban delta region at the southern tip of South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, India. It features a unique estuarine mangrove forested eco system, home to fierce tigers and wily giant crocodiles, being termed as a Biosphere Reserve. Sabuj Sangha also has operational presence in several other villages of Mathurapur I block in the same district, reaching out to 300,000 (Approx) beneficiaries of 60,000 families.

URBAN AREA OF OPERATION:

Sabuj Sangha is implementing it development interventions from its urban unit ”Aalor Disha” (Beacon of light) operating in squatter slum colonies along the railway track from Canning to Baruipur on Sealdah South Railway Division (Kolkata, West Bengal, India), pivoting on Sonarpur Railway Junction reaching out to 5000 households.

JALPAIGURI DISTRICT:

Sabuj Sangha has recently intervened in the rural operational area in the Kumargram Block of Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal, India.
