Acerca de

Founded nearly 25 years ago as a grassroots organization of artists, Staten Island Arts (legal name: The Council on the Arts and Humanities for Staten Island) provides regrants, capacity building, and professional development. Its presentations of traditional, folkloric and contemporary arts include an active gallery/exhibition program, live performances, and a space rental program for community-based organizations to present their programs at Staten Island Arts’ gallery and performance space. The organization is acclaimed for its thematic festivals –including LUMEN, the wildly popular site-specific festival of illuminated art that is held annually at waterfront locations unique to Staten Island.

Over the last several years, Staten Island Arts (SI Arts) has served the community through traditional and contemporary art programs that highlight local artists and build audiences for their work while continuing to provide professional skills development for artists and arts organizations. Programs include:

·        Our regrant program, which is allocating nearly $180,000 for 2017, supports the creation of new work on Staten Island. These grants are one of the only means through which individual artists can access public funds.  Our program serves as a catalyst for Staten Island’s burgeoning arts community.

·        Lifelong arts education programs in elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as with community and senior center participants. Staten Island Arts also offers teaching artist training that gives artists professional development and mentoring so that they can powerfully and effectively share their work.

·        A substantial Folklife program, which works with new and established ethnic communities on Staten Island, including the Irish, Mexican, Liberian, Ghanaian, Sierra Leonean, and Sri Lankan populations. This includes robust fieldwork (interviews and documentation) that is archived, and public programs where local tradition-bearers gain skills and share their work with their own communities and wider audiences.

·        Our Professional Development and Technical Assistance program helps individual artists, collaborators/partners, and cultural organizations in Staten Island to build capacity and produce/present new work. Each year, this program presents three full-day and two half-day professional development conferences. The content for these workshops is based on direct feedback received from the community, needs observed in the field, through grant applications, and through one-on-one consultations with service and community groups. We also provide bi-weekly calendar e-blasts and maintain a community cultural calendar of events on our website.
