PauseAI US

PauseAI US is a nationwide grassroots movement working to pause the development of frontier AI.

AI companies are racing to build a technology that could cause mass unemployment, catastrophic accidents, and even human extinction. 70% of Americans want to pause or slow down dangerous AI development. We organize to stop it.

Our proposal is simple: Don’t build powerful AI systems until we know how to keep them safe. Pause AI.

Surveys of thousands of AI researchers estimate a 1 in 6 chance of human extinction from uncontrollable, superintelligent AI. Currently, there are almost no guardrails on the development of frontier AI, regardless of danger level. AI company CEOs have admitted there’s a chance their technology destroys humanity – but they’re willing to roll the dice anyway.

A pause in AI development is necessary to give our society a chance to catch up, determine if the technology can be built safely (if at all), an democratically decide its future.

PauseAI US is looking for Local Group leaders to drive impact in 3 ways:

1. Local Events - We organize grassroots events such as tabling, signing petitions, hosting educational events, and protesting to mobilize the public on AI safety.
2. Congressional Meetings - Four times a year, we organize volunteers to meet with their Congressional Offices either in their home districts or in Washington, DC.
3. Media Outreach - We regularly engage with national and local media through interviews and OpEds.
