In its historic 1954 ruling in Brown v. Board of Education, which declared segregation in public schools unconstitutional, the U.S. Supreme Court cited the pioneering research of Dr. Mamie Phipps Clark and Dr. Kenneth B. Clark. It was the first time social science research was used in a Supreme Court case.
Their work-which showed how racial inequality negatively affected the self-esteem of young children-helped change the course of American history.
Drs. Kenneth B. and Mamie Clark founded Northside in 1946. Today Northside has served and reached over 4,000 children annually through our five locations in Harlem, Brooklyn and the Bronx through behavioral/mental health, early education, and enrichment programs.
