Our Core was developed in 2017 to umbrella 3 related types of programming that have been uplifting youth in the Newburgh area since 2004. The oldest of these programs, Girls to Ladies, started as a school-based club for teen girls focused on character and life-skill development via community circles and community service. Our "Funding Academics" program formalizes the types financial inputs that have supported Girls to Ladies members as scholars. "Funding Academics" formally put forth college scholarships, and modest needs offerings (the same types of offerings that have been made informally by teachers who see students in need since the beginning of education) for all students, beyond Girls to Ladies. Out of our community service endeavors spawned the AgriCultural Education program in 2018. This program has evolved into a class in urban agriculture, a paid internship growing food, distributing produce, and teaching elementary school students gardening skills, and an opportunity to tackle food security, food justice, and earth stewardship right where we live. Every Our Core opportunity is an opportunity to both build community among youth and for youth to take on leadership roles to change themselves and their world.
