Huru International

Huru International is a 501(c)(3) organization with New York and Nairobi offices, motivated by a simple vision where no girl or woman misses out because of her period.

Without the information or resources needed to manage their periods, millions of African girls are forced to stay home from work and school during their periods. In Kenya alone, nearly 1 million girls miss school each month during their periods. This has serious personal, educational and economic consequences, like being forced to drop out of school, perpetuating cyclical forms of poverty and gender inequity.

Huru addresses this through the provision of high quality reusable menstrual pads, in conjunction with comprehensive health education on menstrual hygiene, sexual and reproductive health, HIV prevention and testing, gender-based violence and life skills education. Huru has reached over 165,000 girls and young women across underserved communities in East Africa with this intervention.

Huru's reusable pads are distributed in 'Huru Kits,' each containing 8 Huru Pads, 3 pairs of panties, detergent-grade soap, a re-sealable bag for used pads, user instructions and information on menstrual and sexual health. Huru Pads are made by women and men from local communities, and each last a minimum of 18 months, making them an environmentally-friendly alternative to disposables.
