CT's History: Carter Via founded Crossing Thresholds (“CT”) in 2008 as the result of a life-changing visit to the Kibera Slum in Nairobi, Kenya. Kibera is the world’s second-largest slum with over a million people inhabiting a tract of land the size of Central Park. Carter was struck not only by the fact that over half of Kibera's inhabitants are under 18, but also that the majority of these children lacked access to education and nourishment. Compelled to take action, Carter established CT with a mission to build schools that would serve as holistic learning environments for some of Kibera’s most vulnerable children. These children now receive two meals per day, educational instruction, social-emotional support and access to an award-winning music program in a safe and motivating learning environment.

Our Objective: We are laser-focused on using education as an instrument for social impact and means to lift children in Kibera out of poverty. We believe the world evenly distributes talent, but doesn’t evenly distribute opportunity. By offering educational opportunities for vulnerable youth in Kibera when they might otherwise not have them, we believe we can change their life trajectories. When we provide these students with places for learning and a network of support, we are strengthening their skills, building their confidence, and empowering them to reach their full potential by staying in school through eighth grade, preparing for high school careers and planning for futures beyond.

The CT Mission: We partner with grassroots leaders in Kibera to create holistic learning environments that inspire and motivate at-risk children to continue their educations, become productive citizens and disrupt the cycle of poverty that confines them to life in the slum.

Who We Serve: We currently serve over 1,200 students from Two-year-old's class through eighth grade at our four primary schools in Kibera. Without our schools and feeding programs, these students would not have access to education or critical nutrition. CT also serves approximately 200 students at our boarding high school north of Nairobi. Despite state-mandated school closures during COVID-19, CT has continued to serve our students through bi-weekly feeding programs thanks to the generous support of our donors. These feeding programs are based out of CT schools and provide enough provisions for students and their families to eat for two weeks.
