Opportunity Schools

The Opportunity Program is a pullout program that is designed to meet the educational needs of children with dyslexia, ADHD, high functioning autism and Asperger’s Syndrome, as well as those with auditory & visual processing challenges. Our research-based multi-sensory methodologies utilize the auditory, visual, and kinesthetic pathways simultaneously and are adapted to each student’s learning style.

The original program was established in 1990 through the generosity of a grandmother of a nine-year-old girl who was diagnosed with multiple learning disabilities. Since our incorporation in 2000, Opportunity Schools has grown from servicing one young girl, to having launched satellite programs at nine schools in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. Through our Satellite School Division and our Teacher Training Institute, we help hundreds of students a year in our program as well as general education classrooms.

For 20 years Opportunity Schools has been dedicated to creating an environment that would help students with learning disabilities unlock their hidden potential and achieve academic success. Students with learning disabilities are at a greater risk of joining gangs and dropping out of school. Studies show that at least 60% of the adult prison populations have learning disabilities, and 40% of juvenile delinquents suffer from learning differences. We offer these students a new chance, and we believe they can change their communities and society for the better.

Opportunity Schools serves its mission by establishing satellite programs at schools to enable them to meet the educational challenges of learning-disabled students who they would otherwise have to turn away. Opportunity Schools also provides professional development in the form of in-service training for all classroom teachers and administrators during the school year, and through our Teacher Training Institute every summer.
