Upper Manhattan Mental Health Center, Inc.

Emma L. Bowen Community Service Center (aka Upper Manhattan Mental Health Center, Inc.) is a nonprofit community-based organization. Established in 1986, it enables individuals and families, regardless of age, to effectively and productively meet the many challenges within today's scope of "problems of living" by providing comprehensive community services in a caring and supportive environment. It helps people with emotional, psychiatric and substance abuse illnesses to recover and become stable and productive citizens of the community.

The Center is licensed by the New York State Office of Mental Health (SOMH), the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services, and the New York State Department of Health. It maintains an effective quality assurance program, which ensures that care and services are provided in an appropriate and excellent manner. In addition to SOMH, funding is provided through the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

Staff are highly trained health care professionals - psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses, care managers, vocational rehabilitation counselors, etc. - who are competent and culturally sensitive. Many are bilingual. With about 175 staff members, the Center is a major employer in Northern Manhattan.

The Center serves over 30,000 individuals a year in an area that extends from 125th Street south to 180th Street north and from Lenox Avenue east to the Hudson River. Quality outpatient ans day treatment services for children, adolescents, adults and senior citizens are available, regardless of ability to pay.
