The HopeLine, or "La Linea de la Esperanza", as most people know us, has been serving the needs of the South Bronx Community since 1990. The majority of those seeking our services are from Latin America. However, our doors open to anyone from the community who is in immediate need.
Twenty years ago, Bishop Francisco Garmendia, Vicar of the South Bronx, and Mr. James P. McLaughlin, President of United Parcel Service (UPS), recognized a need in the community for a bilingual telephone counseling and referral service. The HopeLine became a single-stop center for people to turn to for advice and guidance. Today we have evolved into a full service outreach organization working in one of the poorest congressional districts in the United States. Our goal is to give our clients the critical skills and assistance they need to be strong and healthy family members, positive role models in their communities, and productive members of society.
