Water for Humans

Acerca de

Water for Humans strives to provide clean water solutions to the 2.5 billion people worldwide who lack adequate sanitation and the 884 million without access to safe drinking water. We work to bring sanitation and clean water to people in need through partnerships with local communities, social entrepreneurs, universities and governments. These partnerships eliminate current contamination, ensure clean drinking water, create local jobs and protect local water assets. We are a U.S. based, non-governmental, nonprofit organization 501(c)3 (under the umbrella of A World Institute for Sustainable Humanity. )

OUR SOLUTION

Water for Humans recognizes the critical need to ensure sanitation and safe drinking water today and in the future. We work to eliminate current contamination by creating sustainable solutions to wastewater treatment and management. We also implement techniques to increase clean-water resources and reduce blackwater through permaculture methods, education and public awareness. Our initial project is a constructed wetland for sewage treatment. We will engage communities in restoring and preserving their regional watersheds and water delivery infrastructures.

By collaborating with target communities, local and international NGOs, universities, health professionals and governments, Water for Humans will implement its first project in Santo Domingo Barrio Bajo Etla in the Oaxaca Valley just outside of Oaxaca City, Mexico. We will eliminate the raw sewage currently flowing from the defunct wastewater treatment plant in Santo Domingo. To accomplish this we will design and build a sustainable wastewater treatment system.

The discharge from the wetland will be safe to release into the environment and will be used to grow high-value crops. Associated with the constructed wetland Water for Humans will license two social venture enterprises: an aquaponics business and a water analysis lab. They will be located near the constructed wetland and will use water from the treatment plant for their businesses. The aquaponics business will grow tilapia and hydroponic vegetables to sell. The water analysis lab will be the first certified lab in Oaxaca and will analyze the wastewater to make sure that the constructed wetland qualifies for government operations and maintenance funding for its first two years of operation.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

This project is the first of many that will improve public health, water delivery infrastructure and the economic vitality of these communities. We will continue to develop and support other alternative technology solutions to secure safe household water, such as point-of-use water filters and clean water kiosks. These solutions also include the following potential social ventures: aquaculture, composting latrines, cooking stoves, solar hot water, solar electricity and rainwater catchment. Water culture and water cycle education will be integral parts of all our efforts. These ventures can potentially provide a stable funding source to support our mission.
