ABL Hospice is seeking compassionate and dedicated individuals to provide comfort, companionship, and emotional support to patients with life-limiting illnesses, while also offering relief and encouragement to their families and caregivers throughout San Mateo County.
No prior experience is necessary. Comprehensive training and ongoing support are provided. What matters most is your time, kindness, and sincere desire to be present for someone during an important stage of life.
💙 Volunteer Responsibilities May Include:
- Providing bedside companionship and social visits
- Offering emotional support and compassionate listening
- Reading, playing music, or engaging in meaningful conversation
- Assisting patients with Life Review projects
- Creating memory books or scrapbooks
- Providing respite so caregivers can take a short break
- Assisting with light, non-clinical household tasks
- Providing certified pet therapy visits (if applicable)
Volunteers do not provide medical or personal care.
🏢 Administrative & Creative Volunteer Roles
In addition to patient support, ABL Hospice offers opportunities to assist with:
- Clerical support (filing, answering phones, copying, computer work)
- Preparing and mailing newsletters, sympathy cards, and thank-you notes
- Assisting with outreach and community engagement
- Creating handmade items such as blankets, quilts, scarves, mittens, cards, artwork, or music CDs
- Sharing musical talents in adult day centers or skilled nursing facilities

📋 Volunteer Requirements
- Administrative volunteers must be at least 16 years old
- Patient volunteers must be at least 18 years old
- Background check and drug screening required
- Valid California Driver’s License, ID, or Student ID
- Proof of auto insurance
- Current TB test (provided at no cost by ABL Hospice)
