About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit serving children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability through mentorship, literacy, social-emotional learning (SEL), creative expression, and community-based programs. MAP’s educational work prioritizes consistency, dignity, cultural responsiveness, and accessibility—ensuring learning environments are safe, affirming, and developmentally appropriate for every child.

Curriculum at MAP is not static. It is adaptive, integrated, and designed to meet learners where they are while supporting growth across academic, social, and emotional domains.

About PromiseLearning | Education Division

PromiseLearning oversees curriculum, instruction, pedagogy, mentor development, and educational quality across all MAP programs. The division ensures learning experiences align with evidence-based practice, trauma-informed care, accessibility standards, and MAP’s mission.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Director of Curriculum & Instruction to lead the design, coherence, and quality of MAP’s educational content across programs. This senior leadership role owns curriculum development, instructional standards, and age-banded learning frameworks, ensuring strong alignment across literacy, numeracy, and integrated SEL.

The Director of Curriculum & Instruction works closely with the Chief of Education, Director of Mentor Training & Development, program leadership, and accessibility teams to ensure curriculum is rigorous, culturally responsive, and accessible to all learners.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead curriculum development across Literacy, Math, and integrated SEL
• Establish age-banded learning frameworks for:
  • K–2
  • Grades 3–5
  • Grades 6–8
  • Grades 9–12
• Define instructional standards, learning objectives, and progression pathways
• Ensure curriculum reflects cultural responsiveness, equity, and accessibility principles
• Integrate trauma-informed and developmentally appropriate instructional practices
• Collaborate with mentor training and program teams to ensure curriculum is implementable
• Support alignment between curriculum design and instructional delivery
• Oversee curriculum review cycles, updates, and continuous improvement
• Maintain timely, professional responsiveness via email and chat in Google Workspace

• Literacy & Language Arts Unit
• Numeracy & Academic Foundations Unit
• Integrated SEL Curriculum Unit
• Project-Based & Interdisciplinary Learning Unit

Qualifications

• Experience in curriculum design, instructional leadership, or education program development
• Strong understanding of literacy, numeracy, and SEL integration
• Experience developing age-appropriate learning frameworks and standards
• Knowledge of culturally responsive and accessible instructional practices
• Ability to lead collaboratively across education, training, and program teams
• Alignment with MAP’s mission and dignity-centered values

Preferred Skills

• Experience in K–12 education, nonprofit education programs, or youth development
• Familiarity with trauma-informed and inclusive pedagogy
• Experience working with educators, mentors, or facilitators
• Background in instructional design or learning sciences
• Comfort supporting distributed or hybrid learning environments

Commitment

• Volunteer senior leadership role
• Approximately 5–10 hours per week
• Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
• Fully remote with optional NYC-based collaboration
