Reports to: Executive Director
Hours: 3–5 hrs/week
Commitment: 6–12 months
Role Summary
Provides limited-scope legal assistance to survivors of domestic violence. Supports them with legal information, court accompaniment, safety-related filings, and reviewing legal documents. This role does not require taking clients for full representation unless the attorney chooses.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide legal information (not advice beyond your licensure boundaries) to survivors
- Assist survivors with Orders of Protection, Emergency Orders, and related filings
- Review legal documents (custody, divorce, safety-related paperwork)
- Accompany survivors to court (optional but preferred)
- Support survivors in understanding their legal options and rights
- Maintain strict confidentiality & trauma-informed practice
- Collaborate with case managers and advocates to ensure holistic support
- Assist with developing legal education workshops for the nonprofit
Qualifications
- Licensed Illinois attorney in good standing
- Experience in family law, domestic violence, or victim advocacy preferred
- Ability to communicate complex legal matters with clarity and compassion
- Strong trauma-informed communication skills
- Must pass background check
