The Texas Railway Preservation Association (TRPA) is seeking Legislative Advocacy Officers to join our elite 50-person Government Relations team. Reporting to the Director of Government Affairs, you will serve as a primary boots-on-the-ground representative for the TRPA in the halls of government.
In this volunteer staff role, you are the voice of the SP 982. Your mission is to bridge the gap between our "Apple Garage" headquarters and the municipal, county, and state leaders who hold the keys to land development, historical preservation funding, and regional zoning. You will turn the TRPA’s vision of a "One-of-a-Kind Educational Ecosystem" into a legislative priority for South Texas.
Key Responsibilities
- Targeted Advocacy: Act as the TRPA liaison for your assigned municipal district or county precinct, building professional relationships with local representatives and their staff.
- Policy Monitoring: Track local ordinances, zoning changes, and state preservation grants, providing the Director with real-time intelligence on legislative opportunities or threats.
- Community Mobilization: Represent the TRPA at city council meetings, town halls, and public hearings to advocate for the "Home Development Deal" and other institutional milestones.
- Brand Representation: Under the guidance of the Executive & Branding Director, deliver the TRPA narrative with total professional authority, ensuring politicians see the project as a premier Texas institution.
- Coalition Support: Collaborate with your fellow 50-team members to organize "Day at the Capitol" events or localized neighborhood outreach sorties to build a groundswell of public support.
Professional Requirements
- Political or Civic Aptitude: Experience in political science, law, community organizing, or municipal government is a significant asset.
- Communication Command: Exceptional public speaking and persuasive writing skills; you can deliver a three-minute pitch at a city council hearing that is both cinematic and fact-driven.
- Tactical Professionalism: The ability to navigate sensitive political environments with a "Blue Ambient" executive presence—calm, authoritative, and mission-focused.
- Relentless Drive: You understand that "The Apple Garage" moves fast, and you have the hustle to keep up with a high-tempo legislative calendar.
- Mission Alignment: A genuine commitment to preserving Texas industrial history and a desire to see the TRPA secure its permanent footprint in the Houston skyline.
The TRPA Advantage
This isn't a standard volunteer gig. You are joining a structured, 50-person political force designed to win. You will gain direct experience in high-level lobbying and government relations while helping to architect the legal and political foundation of a world-class institution.
