Impact and Purpose
The Mattaponi District is seeking mission-driven leaders to serve as Unit Commissioners. In this role, you act as a strategic counselor, coach, and friend to adult volunteers who lead local Scouting units. Your primary goal is to ensure that every child in our community has access to a high-quality program that builds character, citizenship, and personal fitness.
Key Responsibilities
As a Unit Commissioner, you are a "unit specialist" and the primary link between our council and local units. Your core functions include:
- Strategic Coaching: Act as a friend, coach, and counselor to unit leaders, helping them identify program weaknesses and suggesting effective remedies.
- Performance Consulting: Use the Unit Metrics framework to help units measure their success and achieve high performance in outdoor activities, membership growth, advancement, adult training, and retention
- Liaison & Advocacy: Facilitate a positive relationship between the "Key 3" leadership of local units (the unit leader, committee chair, and chartered organization representative).
- Resource Navigation: Guide unit volunteers to the training, literature, and district events necessary for their success.
Qualifications
We are looking for individuals who possess:
- Leadership of Adults: The ability to motivate and lead other adult volunteers in a professional and diplomatic manner.
- Adaptability: The skill to navigate changing circumstances and diverse personality types within various community organizations.
- Communication: Strong interpersonal skills for regular unit contact and reporting back to the District Commissioner staff.
- Commitment to Service: A belief in the ideals of Scouting and a desire to see youth in the Mattaponi District thrive.
- Note: Prior Scouting experience is helpful, but we provide comprehensive training for "fast-track" learners who are new to the movement.
