Do you have taxonomical knowledge of one or several families or genera of arthropods? (specifically, of common arthropod species in the Massachusetts area). If so, we need your skills!
An Arthropod Taxonomy Data Curator is a specialist who helps document and verify the identification of arthropods, which include insects, spiders, and other similar creatures. Their role involves curating records, ensuring the accuracy of taxonomic data, and often working with participatory scientists to compile robust data about arthropod interactions and their associations with floral hosts.
Help EwA document arthropod interaction networks so that we can understand better arthropod activity and their association dynamic with their floral hosts. Your role is to help curate the records of EwA participatory scientists, specifically to verify and help identify the arthropods documented using the EwA Buggy protocol - Project information: www.anecdata.org/projects/view/ewa-buggy.

Thanks for your interest in volunteering with Earthwise Aware through VolunteerMatch! We’re thrilled that you’re interested in curating data for 🪲 EwA Buggy, our participatory science project focused on documenting arthropod–plant interaction networks. By studying arthropod activity and their floral associations, we aim to uncover insights into ecosystem function and biodiversity trends.
As an Arthropod Taxonomy Curator, your role would involve verifying and correcting taxonomy records in the Buggy database—at the species, genus, family, or order level. This role is best suited for volunteers with either:
- A strong generalist knowledge of arthropod taxonomy, or
- Specific expertise in particular groups of arthropods.

This short assessment allows us to match your expertise with the areas where it’s most needed. If you’re just starting with arthropod taxonomy, this curator role may not be the right fit for now. But you can still contribute!
- Anywhere: Use the Buggy app to submit your own interaction observations to the open database [install instructions].
- Boston area: Join us in the field as a participatory scientist to get hands-on experience observing arthropods in their natural context [field orientation schedule].
