Child Abuse Response Team (CART) is a group of highly dedicated volunteers who accompany a child or adolescent and their family through the child’s forensic medical exam for suspected sexual assault or sexual abuse. CART provides accompaniment 24/7.
As an Advocate you will respond to one of three local hospitals when contacted by the forensic nurse. We serve hospitals in Long Beach, Torrance, and San Pedro.
RESPONSIBILITIES
As the child/adolescent's advocate, CART members accompany the victim at the hospital and provide companionship during their visit by playing games, reading books, doing puzzles or other activities. CART members accompany the victim during the exam, help the parents cope with what has happened. CART members provide information for the family about the treatment services offered by For The Child for both the child/adolescent and the caregivers(s).
Advocates are required to complete a 40-hour training provided at no cost by For The Child. The training takes place two times per week (Monday afternoon and Saturdays) over a 30 day period. Must be at least 21 years old, live local to the Long Beach/South Bay area, pass a background check, including Live Scan and DMV driving record, fully vaccinated and submit proof of COVID vaccinations. Advocates must commit to one year as a CART volunteer.
